Enriching lives in extremely difficult places.
We seek to eradicate the drudgery of prison life and point people towards new musical experiences, whether they are incarcerated or not. The Heavy has a combination of interesting and useful articles with original art. All contributors are incarcerated.
The majority of our writers have master’s degrees. Some have published books, or have repeatedly written for established magazines. Some of our writers have done all three.
Our talented artists use their outstanding talents to accomplish several things. Some of the art is a commentary on prison life. Some of the art illustrates the music reviews and articles. Other drawings have current event or comedic value.
Production of The Heavy has been accomplished with manual typewriters and pen or pencil on standard paper. Our writers and artists are housed in non airconditioned units. Please be understanding of the limitations.

The new digital publication of The Heavy will cover a broader spectrum of music genres, have more reviews, deeper and heavier articles dealing with the interplay of mental health and music. Artwork will be bigger and more detailed. The Heavy will no longer contain ads. We will add writer and artist profiles.
We are exploring adding content written by non-incarcerated experts
We hope to add musician interviews in addition to guest articles by mental health and music professionals.
